If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about making a change in your career. Whether it’s time to move on to another position, a new industry, or you’ve just been laid off, Prepare to Tack is here to help guide you through the steps to finding your ideal career.
This blog isn’t about finding a job. Anyone can find a job. What many people struggle with is finding a career.
Your first thought may be, “What’s the difference?”
If you think that the terms “job” and “career” are the same thing, you couldn’t be more wrong!
To prove my point, let’s take a look at how Merriam-Webster defines both of these words.
“A small miscellaneous piece of work undertaken on order at a stated rate.”
“A profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling.”
Now I ask you, which one of these would you rather have—a “Job” or a “Career”?
A job is simply that—a JOB. It’s a way to make money and pay the bills. Nothing more, nothing less.
On the other hand, a CAREER is so much more! Good ol’ Merriam-Webster couldn’t have defined it any better. The words “profession” and “permanent calling” leave you feeling as though there are so many more possibilities with a career versus a job.
Sure, we have all had to take on our own fair share of jobs. Someone has to pay those bills and keep food on the table! However, just because you’ve only had a job in the past or just because you’re in a job right now doesn’t mean that you don’t have a chance at a successful career.
Maybe you’re thinking that you just don’t have that special thing that those career people have. Guess what? Those career people don’t have anything special. They simply recognized certain skills they had and they built upon those skills in order to progress into their careers.
More than likely, you already have existing skills that you can build on in order to identify and land the career you’ve always dreamt about. Taking the next step forward to finding that career is not rocket science and anyone can do it. However, perhaps you’re just not sure where to start or the best way to approach your career search or change.
